Dear Families,

Can you believe that we have less than 20 school days together? The kindergartners are working hard on report card evaluations. We will begin practicing our letters on fill in the blank sheets next week. The following week the kindergartners will write all the letters, capital and lowercase, on a fill in the blank type of worksheet. We learned the diagraphs ch and ee. We decoded many words on our papers this week. The boys and girls impress the teachers with all that they have learned this year in reading. Reading the booklets at home and reviewing the flashcards has really helped the boys and girls. We read the big book A Chair For My Mother and thought of different gifts the students would give to their hard working mothers.

There is no school for students tomorrow, May 1st. The teachers get to participate in many important meetings.

We have been working on our Grandparent/Guest Day songs. Please fill out the bottom portion of this week’s newsletter for Grandparent/Guest Day and send it back with your kindergartner. Kindergartners that do not have grandparents that can attend may invite a different adult. We need to know how many people are coming so that we can arrange for enough chairs and make enough cookies. If people do not return slips, then people may be standing and starving.

Our annual track and field day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th. (If it is raining, we will have it on Thursday, May 28th.) When all the events are over, kindergartners are allowed to go home with their families. A schedule of events and their times will be sent home with your child. Our last day of school is Thursday, May 28th. The boys and girls are dismissed early; 1:35 for town students and 1:40 for bus children.

Please watch the weather reports and dress your kindergartner appropriately. It is okay to send a light jacket and a heavier coat on days that you are not sure about the temperature. We’d rather have them a bit warm than freezing!

Have a safe and fun weekend!

Mrs. Daugherty, Mrs. Owens, Mrs. Pokorny, Mr. Degner, and Mrs. Herink

Dear Families,

During this week the students learned about a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, and u-e. They learned that they symbol “-” stands for any consonant. They learned that the “sneaky e” at the end of the word makes the vowel sound say its long sound. We discussed Earth Day by reading books and watching some informative videos. The boys and girls picked up litter on the playground and by the football field. Kindergartners wrote in their journals completing the sentence “I can help the Earth by ........”. Centers included planting seeds with our friend Mrs. Laurie Schafer, the patterning evaluation, writing in the missing letter on a worksheet, dominoes, word bingo, floating ducks with numbers on their tummies, and the Go Fishing beginning sound game.

Remember, there is no school for the kindergartners next week. Any kindergartner that shows up at school will be sent back home!

The Grandparent/Guest Days are Thursday, May 14th and Friday, May 15th. Students may invite their grandparents for either day. Invitations were sent home this week. If you need more invitations for some reason, please let us know. We have made a few extras. If there are no grandparents that can attend, please invite an adult friend to attend. If you have more than one set of grandparents, they may all attend on one day or some on Thursday and some on Friday. It is really important to have SOMEONE attend at least one of the days. We have found that students that have NO guests either day feel really, really bad.

During sandal weather, please send extra socks with your kindergartner so that they can wear them with their gym shoes to gym class.

Please send a picture of your kindergartner to school. We will be making a special project with them so the picture will not return home in its original form. Also, many students STILL need new glue sticks. Please, please, please send a new glue stick if you haven’t during the last 2 weeks.

Track and field day has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th. If the weather is inclement, then track and field day will be rescheduled for Thursday, May 28th. By the way, Thursday, May 28th is the last day of school!

Have a wonderful time with your kindergartner during round up vacation!

Dear Families,

During this week the students did several Easter/spring activities. They practiced reading color words with an Easter Bunny booklet and an Easter egg coloring paper. The kindergartners made Easter cards and worked with beginning sounds on a cute Easter beginning sound paper. We practiced using dimes, nickels, pennies, and quarters. The boys and girls learned about the digraph oo. Oo has two sounds: oo as in hook and oo as in tooth. More flashcards are attached! Please practice them often to help your student become a confident reader.

IN THE FUTURE, during sandal weather, please send extra socks with your kindergartner so that they can wear them with their gym shoes to gym class. Please send a sweatshirt or jacket to school. When we go outside for the very first recess, (when it is nice!) it tends to be a bit cool.

Please send a picture of your kindergartner to school. We will be making a special project with them so the picture will not return home in its original form.

Remember that the students do not have school Monday, April 20th - Friday, April 24th. That is Round Up vacation. School will resume on Monday, April 27th. During break it would be great if students would review birthdays, phone numbers, addresses, days of the week, months of the year, counting by tens and fives, counting to 100 by ones, and identifying coins and their values. Reading is also a terrific idea!

Track and Field Day is currently scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th. The kindergartners will participate in 3 different events. They do the 50 yard dash, the sack race, and the tug of war. Track and Field Day typically runs all day, but the kindergartners’ events are scheduled pretty closely together. Information will be coming home in the future about this popular event. The rain date is scheduled for Thursday, May 28th.

Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Dear Families,

The kindergartners learned the digraph th. The digraph th has two sounds; th as in feather and th as in thimble. The students practiced reading color words and listened to 2 books on tape by Gail Gibbons. One book was about whales, and the other book was about zoos. We practiced the counting on math skill and filled out April calendars. The boys and girls decorated kites that are now hanging in the classroom. The kites make our room look so springy! Centers included painting, reading books, making bunny boxes for Easter, playing #11 - 40 bingo, playing Candyland, counting milk caps into groups of ten to help our school earn extra money, and playdough.

Students are dismissed one hour early on Thursday, April 9th. They do not have school on Friday, April 10th. This will be our short spring break. The Friday sharing kids may bring their sharing any day next week.

Kindergartners will have the week of April 20 - 24 off because of kindergarten round up. They will return on Monday, April 27th.

****We need a snapshot or school picture of every kindergartner for an art project in May. We would like you to send the picture as soon as possible! These will be used in a project so they will not be returned to you.****

Grandparent’s Days are scheduled for Thursday, May 14th and Friday, May 15th. Grandparents may attend either of those days. Official invitations will be decorated soon and sent home.

Have a fantastic weekend!
