Dear Families,

This was our last full week for school! (Remember, we do not have school on Monday.) That is very hard to believe! The boys and girls were able to visit both first grade rooms and write in their journals what they are excited about doing in first grade. We finished all of our math lessons. The students completed evaluations for the report card. We learned about dinosaurs and practiced reading the color words. This week we went on several walks (weather permitting). We went on a spring walk, a walk to visit the Traer Public Library, and a walk to visit the Traer nursing home to entertain the residents with our Grandparent’s Day songs.

Do not forget that on Wednesday, May 27th, we have our annual track and field day. Our events are the sack race at 12:30, the 50 yard dash at 12:45, and the tug-of-war at 1:00. When all the events are over, families may pick their child up at the child’s room. They will have backpacks and folders to pick up and take home. We will probably have to wait in the room for a little bit to get our certificates from track and field day. Please put sunscreen on the children at home and send some to be put on later if needed. While we are outside participating in track and field day we like to have the children stay with the class instead of walking around with their families. It is easier to keep track of 36 students that way. Since we are not out at the track and field day all day, we DO NOT want beach towels or water bottles sent to school with the kindergartners!

Kindergartners have the opportunity to earn four special awards at the close of the school year. One of the awards is called Outstanding Attendance and is given to the children who missed two days or less this school year. Children receiving this must also not have been tardy more than twice. Two awards are academic awards. An award is given to the children who can correctly count to 100, and one is given to the children who can correctly name all of the letters of the alphabet, both capital and lower case. Children who can tie their own shoes will receive an award. Children who do not receive any of these four awards WILL receive an award which recognizes their particular strengths. This way all children will receive at least one award. The awards will be handed out on Thursday, May 28th. Watch the Traer Star Clipper for your child’s name! We give the newspaper a list of academic and attendance award winners.

There is still time to sign up for Mrs. Owens’ summer school sessions! Fill out the form and include a check for this great opportunity.

This will be our last weekly newsletter for this year. An end of the year newsletter will be included in the kindergarten report cards.

Have a safe weekend!

Dear Families,

Wow! 13 days of school remain? It doesn’t seem possible! The kindergartners continued working hard on report card evaluations. We learned the combinations ar, or, and er. We decoded many words on our papers this week. We keep telling the boys and girls that the first grade teachers are excited to have them next year because they are reading so well. Reading the booklets at home and reviewing the flashcards has really helped the boys and girls. This week we practiced our Grandparent/Guest Day songs everyday. Centers included reading books, making Mother’s Day cards, coloring a sunny door hanger, working with the Marble Magic set, creating with geoboards, playing the Hulabaloo game, and working in the clothing store dramatic play center.

The kindergartners made Mother’s Day gifts this week. If anything falls off the gift, just glue it back on. It will be fine. If your student did not bring a picture to put on the gift, you may add one at home.

Please fill out the bottom portion of this week’s newsletter for Grandparent/Guest Day and send it back with your kindergartner. Kindergartners that do not have grandparents that can attend may invite a different adult. We need to know how many people are coming so that we can arrange for enough chairs and make enough cookies. If people do not return slips, then people may be standing and starving.

Our annual track and field day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th. (If it is raining, we will have it on Thursday, May 28th.) When all the events are over, kindergartners are allowed to go home with their families. A schedule of events and their times will be sent home with your child. Our last day of school is Thursday, May 28th. The boys and girls are dismissed early; 1:35 for town students and 1:40 for bus children.

Please watch the weather reports and dress your kindergartner appropriately. It is okay to send a light jacket and a heavier coat on days that you are not sure about the temperature. We’d rather have them a bit warm than freezing!

Have a terrific weekend!

Mrs. Daugherty, Mrs. Owens, Mrs. Pokorny, Mr. Degner, and Mrs. Herink
